Senator Baldwin Discusses Climate Change with Tribal Leaders

Friday, August 9th, 2019 -- 8:47 AM

(WRN) -Senator Tammy Baldwin met with with Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe leaders this week to discuss climate change and what needs to be done.

Tribal President Joseph Wildcat Sr. tells WJFW that increased lake levels and repeated flooding have damaged several seasons worth of wild rice harvests.

"We've seen a very steep decline in that and that's a triggering point. That tells us that there's something going on with the environment."

Baldwin tells WJFW that traditional Ojibwe wild rice harvests are being damaged by flooding and high water.

"Habitat for growing has clearly shrunk, has clearly been threatened over time, and climate change is a big contributor to that."

Tribal leaders say they're already working on ways to combat damage including flood protection. Baldwin wants to keep the tribes in the discussion as new climate change legislation comes through Congress.
