(WRN) -The Department of Natural Resources is expanding their efforts to help control the spread of chronic wasting disease by trying to get deer waste out of the environment. The Department of Natural Resources is looking for partners to help host Chronic Wasting Disease collection kiosks in the upcoming deer season. Bureau of Wildlife Management Acting Director Tami Ryan says the kiosks are one of the best ways for hunters to help track the spread of C W D.
"Provide a really convenient way for hunters to get their deer into the system."
Ryan says they're looking for private groups to help host special garbage dumpsters specifically to collect what remains after butchering a deer.
"We know that deer carcass waste can be a source of disease transmission, and so we are reducing that risk of disease transmission by getting that off the landscape and into a landfill."
Ryan says they want to keep deer carcasses out of the environment once they've been butchered.
"The most important part is the spinal column and the brain. Those are the most important pieces to haul out and get into a dumpster."
Ryan says this can not only prevent the transmission of C W D but other diseases as well. This, along with the deer head collection program, are part of the D N R's continued efforts to fight C W D. If you'd like to host either a kiosk or a collection site, contact your local D N R office.
