(WRN) -Governor Tony Evers is calling on Republican leadership at the Capitol to take up gun control legislation in the wake of the mass shootings in Texas and Ohio.Governor Tony Evers is calling on Republican leadership at the Capitol to take up gun control legislation in the wake of the mass shootings in Texas and Ohio. Evers says mass shootings are something that can affect anyone, anywhere and that debating legislation is the best way to force a discussion.
"That's what the kids from Parkland have been talking about for the past several years, let's have a discussion, instead of saying 'Oh my gosh, this is not the time to talk about it.' Well that's boloney."
Evers says there's wide support from the public to keep guns out of the hands of those that shouldn't have them.
"Universal background checks, expanding that to cover every sale of a weapon, is something that the majority of the people of Wisconsin believe in."
When asked if he'd call a special session of the Legislature to take up gun control, Evers said it's not going to matter without bipartisan support.
"The bottom line is our legislature has avoided this issue totally, so whether there's a special session or not, we need to know that the other side is going to take this issue seriously."
Evers says mass shootings like the one in Middleton last year and at the Sikh temple several years ago show that the issue is one that isn't avoiding the Badger State. Evers supports universal background checks and the 'red flag' laws which would keep guns out of the hands of people deemed dangerous to themselves or others.
