Neillsville Fire Department Responds to Business/Apartment Fire on Saturday

Monday, August 5th, 2019 -- 11:47 AM

-The Neillsville Fire Department responded to a business/apartment fire Saturday evening.

The fire occurred around 8:15pm on Saturday, August 3rd at 551 and 549 Hewett Street. The building is home to apartments as well as The Cannabis Cultivators Store in Neillsville. A tenant of the apartment called and reported smoke coming from the eve of the building. When the department arrived, they entered a stairway to the apartment and noticed visible flames. They were able to put the fire out within 10-15 minutes, but remained on scene for 4 hours to check for any remaining hot spots or flare ups. They department believes the fire could be electrical as there were many panel and wiring around where the fire was. They also believe the fire could have been caused by lightning after a storm moved through the area Saturday evening. The department received mutual aid from the Granton Fire Department for manpower and the Spencer Fire Department for the use of their ladder truck.

They also received assistance from the Neillsville Police Department, the Clark County Sheriff’s Department, the Neillsville Ambulance Service and the Red Cross was called later to assist the people displaced by the fire. There was damage to the roof of the building and fire damage to an apartment bathroom after a section of the ceiling collapsed. The rest of the apartments and Cannabis Cultivators received smoke and water damage. A couple fire fighters did receive some minor injuries during the incident. One fire fighter fell of a ladder and injured his knee and lower leg. He was taken to Marshfield Medical Center-Neillsville and then to Marshfield Medical Center in Marshfield. Another fire fighter was bit by a cat he was trying to rescue from the apartment.
