Funds Available for Clark County Farmers to Help them Recover from Bad Weather

Friday, August 2nd, 2019 -- 10:45 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The unusually cold and wet weather Wisconsin has been experiencing this year has prompted the U.S. Department of Agriculture to designated 21 state counties as primary natural disaster areas.

On Thursday, USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue announced that farmers in those counties may be eligible for emergency credit from the Farm Service Agency to help them recover from disasters, such as winter kills, flooding and other damages to crops and buildings. Counties with the natural disaster designation include Clark County as well as Barron, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Florence, Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marinette, Oconto, Oneida, Pierce, Portage, Price, Rusk, St. Croix, Sawyer, Taylor, and Wood. Perdue says emergency loans can be used to meet various recovery needs including the replacement of essential items such as equipment or livestock, reorganization of a farming operation or the refinance of certain debts.

Meanwhile, producers in the contiguous counties of Adams, Ashland, Bayfield, Brown, Buffalo, Burnett, Douglas, Iron, Jackson, Juneau, Menominee, Pepin, Polk, Shawano, Trempealeau, Vilas, Washburn, Waupaca, and Waushara, along with Dickinson, Iron, and Menominee counties in Michigan, and Dakota, Goodhue, and Washington counties in Minnesota, are also eligible to apply for emergency loans. The deadline to apply for assistance is March 25, 2020. FSA will review the loans based on the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability. The agency has a variety of additional programs to help farmers recover from the impacts of this disaster.
