Governor Evers Calls on State Agencies to Improve Water Quality

Thursday, August 1st, 2019 -- 10:42 AM

(WRN) -Governor Tony Evers is calling on his state agencies to improve water quality across Wisconsin.

Evers says he's pushing for new testing of groundwater, especially in places where nitrates and other runoff have heavily contaminated well water.

"Funding a study in southwest Wisconsin to evaluate the extent of drinking water contamination and where those contaminants are coming from."

Evers says the goal is to ensure clean, drinkable tap water in every home in Wisconsin.

"For the first time in ten years, Wisconsin is pursuing health-based groundwater standards for 24 contaminants."

Evers says his goal is to make the water coming out of the tap in every home safe to drink.

"We're getting tough and taking legal action to hold pollutors responsible for unreported contamination of hazardous chemicals that threaten drinking water across the state."

The D N R will be rolling out those new standards, and other agencies will work on groundwater testing and replacing lead service lines.
