(WRN) -Charges have been filed against nine people, as the state Department of Justice works to test thousands of rape kits. That's according to data released Wednesday by the DOJ. Attorney General Josh Kaul told the Associated Press that he expects more charges as more tests are completed. Thirty-five cases have been referred for charging decisions so far.Clearing the backlog of untested kits was a main issue in last year's campaign for attorney general.
In 2015, Republican AG Brad Schimel secured a 4 million dollar federal grant for testing kits, although that didn't begin until 2017. Forty-one hundred kits were tested prior to the 2018 election which Schimel lost to Kaul.
