Wisconsin's Transportation Secretary Talks Road Funding

Monday, July 22nd, 2019 -- 10:36 AM

(WRN) -Transportation Secretary-Designee Craig Thompson says legislative Republicans are misinformed about how a 75 million dollar package of grants will be spent on transportation projects statewide.

"All we said was transit projects for cities could compete for some of these as well, and the city of Milwaukee said they don't have any intention of trying to get money out of this project for the streetcars, so that's just been a lot of misinformation."

He says that money will actually be split up based on a scoring matrix and panel of leaders.

"And we're going to have certain criteria that we're going to judge each of the applicants against, and their peers will make decisions based on that criteria."

Thompson says the money will actually be split up based on a set of criteria laid out by county, city, and town officials.

"There's a lot of bridge projects, there's a lot of local road projects. If people can demonstrate economic development capabilities, they will compete for some of that money."

Last week, Republicans threatened to undo the veto that created the funding because the funds could be used for things other than bridges and roads.
