Beware of Buckling Roads in the Heat
Friday, July 19th, 2019 -- 11:46 AM
(WRN) -Hot weather outside is going to mean some chances for road buckles on highways.D-O-T spokesman Mark Kantola says road buckles occur when two pieces of roadway heat up and expand into each other until one side can't take it anymore.
"Kind of like if you used the knuckles of both of your hands and push against hard enough one of the knuckles pops up."
Kantola says road buckles can be extremely dangerous, and need to be reported immediately.
"Treat it as a dangerous situation. Call 9-1-1, tell them there's chewed up pavement or a pavement buckle."
If you spot a buckle, take it slow and don't try to speed over it. Kantola says the state has seen dozens of buckles already this week. He reminds people to drive carefully and be safe around road crews trying to fix the road.
