Fairest of the Fair Encourages Others to Run

Wednesday, June 26th, 2019 -- 1:06 PM

-The Clark County Fair is fast approaching and we’ll soon have a new Fairest of the Fair.

I spoke with current Fairest of the Fair, Dana Bautch, and she explained why someone should run for Fairest of the Fair.

"I think being Fairest of the Fair gives you many great opportunities and allows you to really grow. It has allowed me to be apart of many different leadership opportunities and public speaking opportunities, such as this one. So, I think it allows you, as a person, to grow."

She also explained how someone can run if they’re interested.

"On the Clark County Extension web site, there are the applications for both Fairest of the Fair and Future Fairest of the Fair. You fill out the application. There is a short essay that's required and you turn that in, along with securing a sponsorship, and they'll get back to you. That's all you have to do to start running!"

Dana said if you’re on the fence about running, you should just go for it.

"If you're thinking about doing this at all, just do it. This is an amazing opportunity to not only represent and promote your county's fair, but it's also a great way to give back to your community. Our community is so supportive of, not just this program, but the fair as well. And it's amazing to be able to go out throughout the county and be able to meet everybody and talk to them. It's such a blessing to do it and I highly encourage everyone to do it."

Dana also talked about her experience at the state Fairest of the Fair competition.

Dana: "In January, I went to Wisconsin Dells to compete for Wisconsin's Fairest of the Fair. There were about 40 other girls there competing and it didn't feel like a competition because they gave you so much preparation, so much training and, really, they were just there looking out for all of us, trying to make our year better, trying to give us tips so we can learn more, become better leaders, better public relations speakers. They, in fact, introduced us to a lot of the staff from the Wisconsin State Fair. And it's just really encouraging to be able to meet all these different people who have a real love for the fair and agriculture too. So, it's a blessing to be able to do all that and meet everybody."

Riley: "So, in away, it was almost more like a leadership or training conference than a competition?"

Dana: "It was more like a training, because they told us how to give a good radio interview, which I'm hoping I'm giving a good one! They told us how to speak with a microphone, because some people have issues with that. They taught us how to dress appropriately for a media interview. So, it was really nice to be able to sit down with all those people and really learn from them."

Dana ended our interview with this solid piece of advice.

To anybody that's not interested, or can't run for this, I still encourage you to come on down to the Clark County Fair in Neillsville! It's August 7th through the 11th this year and I'll see you there!
