Darek Gress - Pilot of The 107.5 Asphalt Rocket Claims Marshfield Main

Monday, June 24th, 2019 -- 12:08 PM

Marshfield, WI, (June 22, 2019) ??" It was a great night of racing for the WCAR Kid’s Night at the Races, with many children enjoying prizes and the thrilling stock car rides. Fans were treated to five divisions of racing, as fans from Neillsville, Pittsville, and Vesper were admitted free.

Colin Reffner made his 2019 CWRA debut here tonight, and Reffner, who calls Wisconsin Rapids, WI home, topped all cars in qualifying, earning another fast time honor at the half-mile paved oval. For the CWRA super late models, it was Russ Tillman and Darek Gress earning heat wins.

Once the super late models took to the track, it was Curt Tillman and Monte Gress leading the field to the green flag. After the completion of lap one, it was Rockton, Illinois driver Curt Tillman leading the way. Action Racing driver Monte Gress fought back to the outside of Tillman as the two drivers exited turn four on lap two. With Monte Gress claiming the top spot, it was Darek Gress taking over the runner up position with a pass of Tillman. With a pair of #107.5 drivers leading the field, the driver everyone was watching, Colin Reffner, put his hot rod into the third spot from deep in the field. It goes without question that Colin Reffner has been the fastest driver for the past few years at Marshfield Motor Speedway. The third generation driver has earned many fast times, fast heat, and feature wins on the half-mile paved oval. With that being said, I’m sure Darek Gress was keeping an eye on his rear view mirror to see where Reffner was. Nekoosa, WI driver Darren Jackson, whom of which earlier in the day turned the second quickest lap in qualifying, motored his #28 car up to the fourth position. With Darek Gress holding a 6-car length lead, Colin Reffner moved past Monte Gress with an inside pass on lap 16 of 30. Now that Reffner cleared the machine of Monte Gress, he set his sights on the tail end of the Darek Gress machine. As each lap eclipsed, it was apparent that Colin Reffner was closing on Gress. As starter Patrick Barrett threw the white flag indicating one lap remaining, Reffner was on the rear bumper of Gress. As the two drivers exited turn two, it was Reffner moving to the inside of Gress. Entering turn three, Reffner and Gress were dead even; with the fans loudly cheering, it was going to be a drag race off turn four, for the two drivers, for the race win. Once Barrett threw the checkered flag, it was Darek Gress edging out Colin Reffner by a half a car length. Making a last lap pass of Darren Jackson, was new point leader, Jeff Weinfurter for the third position. With Jackson grabbing the fourth position, it was Monte Gress earning the fifth spot.
