Neillsville School Board Hears Concerns About New Laude Grading System

-The Neillsville School Board heard some grievances, via letter, at their meeting last week.During District Administrator John Gaier’s report, he shared a letter from a parent concerned about the district’s new Laude Grading System. At the end of April, the board approved transitioning the Class of 2020 to the new system. This system allows students to earn points and, using a chart, the number of points and their GPA would give them a score and that score would have them graduate either Cum, Magna Cum or Summa Cum Laude. Administration felt this would be better for their students as no two students are the same and they feel students may be more willing to challenge themselves.
The district received two letters about this matter. The first was from a parent whose main concern seemed to be where her daughter walks during graduation. She felt the implementation should have been pushed back. Another letter came from the entire Class of 2020. They weren’t opposed to their class being the first to use the system for graduation, but they felt there should be more opportunities for them to gain points. Mr. Gaier did state that they’ll be reaching out to the Class of 2020 to provide more information and address their concerns.
