Stepping On Workshop to Start This Week

Sunday, June 23rd, 2019 -- 9:59 AM

The Clark County Health Department is pleased to announce a Stepping On workshop will be offered in Granton.

The workshop helps older adults to prevent falls. The workshop is for two hours, once a week, for a total of seven weeks. The next workshop will be held at the Granton Community Center located at 315 Maple Street, Granton. The classes are all on Wednesday and all run from 1pm-3pm. They dates are June 26th, July 3rd, July 10th, July 17th, July 24th, July 31st, and August 7th.

Stepping On will help participants identify why they fall and different ways to prevent falls, including strength and balance exercises, home safety check suggestions, and a medication review. Participants will view a display of falls prevention products. The workshop is both for people who have fallen and for people who fear falling. Participants leave will leave with more strength, achieve better balance, and experience a feeling of confidence and independence as a result of performing various exercises and sharing personal falls experiences as a group.

The workshop features guest expert presenters including a physical therapist, an optometrist, a pharmacist, and a law enforcement official. The guest speakers are from Marshfield Medical Center-Neillsville, Foster Primary Eye Care, Sniteman’s Pharmacy, and the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. Those conducting the workshop include Brittany Mews, RN BSN-Clark County Health Department and Mindy Burns, RN BSN-Clark County Health Department. The program was developed by Dr. Lindy Clemson of Sydney, Australia, to help older adults learn ways to prevent falls. It was brought to the United States by Dr. Jane Mahoney, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and other partners. The research has found that people who complete the workshop have a 31% reduced rate of falls. The class fee is $15.00.
