(WRN) -State consumer protection is reminding people to help keep their elderly neighbors and family members safe from scammers.State consumer protection is reminding people to help keep their elderly neighbors and family members safe from scammers. Secretary designee Brad Pfaff says elderly residents can sometimes be more easily targeted because they like having people to talk to, and can be shamed into keeping a scam a secret.
"Unfortunately many times the offers that are being offered are much too good to be true, and sadly people are being taken advantage of."
Pfaff says his department's got a special Senior Guide on how to help protect the elderly from phone scams and other sorts of financial abuse.
"Elders and individuals of all ages should take a look at it in order to best educate themselves and protect themselves from people, unfortunately, who are preying on other people."
Pfaff says one of the best ways to protect the elderly from scams is to simply keep in contact with them.
"Check in, obviously, with Mom and Dad, Grandpa and Grandma, your uncles and your aunts. Walk across the street and say hi to your elderly neighbor. See how they're doing."
