Owen-Withee School Board Hires New Basketball Coach
Sunday, June 16th, 2019 -- 5:47 AM
-The Owen-Withee School Board had to deal with some inner drama before they hired the district’s new basketball coach. The administration initially brought to candidates before the board at their meeting in May. Adam Simington and Josh Jalling were both highly qualified candidates, but, in the end, the administration recommended hiring Simington as the coach. However, some objections were raised during the May meeting, so the item was table, even with the objection of administration, until the June meeting. At Monday’s meeting, administration, again, recommended Simington be hired as the coach. However, a motion made by a board member did not receive a second and was killed. A motion was then made by another board member, and seconded, to hire Jalling as the coach.
But it was decided it should be tabled until the end of the meeting and the board would go into closed session to discuss it. According to an article by Travis Rogers in the Rural and Sentinel News, the board did just that and loud, arguing voices could be heard behind closed doors. During closed session, the board voted down the motion to hire Josh Jalling 2-4. When they returned to open session, the board approved the hiring of Adam Simington as the new coach on a voice vote with it being approved 4-2.
