Presentations Begin Owen-Withee School Board Meeting

-The Owen-Withee School Board heard a couple presentations to begin their meeting on Monday.The first presentation was given by a couple elementary teachers and it was regarding the idea of changing the grading practice for grades 3rd-5th from traditional grades (A, B, C, D, F) to standards-based grading which is more informative and breaks down assessment using the Wisconsin Standards. The board had questions about how parents will receive the new system and how it will be implemented. As this is the method of grading used in grades 4K-2nd already this should be an easier transition. The 2nd presentation was also presented by some elementary teachers and it was regarding the elementary curriculum from the American Reading Company that they would like to purchase and implement in the 2019-20 school year.
The K-5th curriculum covers reading, writing, phonics and spelling as well as provides reading instruction in the content areas of science and social studies. The purchase will be completed over three years, with the Literacy Lab and Research Lab for each grade purchased this year. Next year, two more research labs per grade level, plus the School Pace will be purchased. The third year, if needed, they’ll purchase the fundamental tools kits for each grade.
