Marshfield Alderman Advance Design for New Aquatic Center

Wednesday, June 12th, 2019 -- 8:44 AM

(WDLB) -Marshfield aldermen are advancing the design for a new aquatic center in the city.

The Common Council last night voted in favor of a recommendation from the city’s Board of Public Works to hire Ayres Associates of Eau Claire to design and engineer the new pool replacement, at a cost of 329-thousand dollars. Alderman Steve Mac Swain voted against the proposal. He wanted the Council to pump the brakes on the project, to give Marshfield Utilities more time to decide how they might want to use the existing pool space instead.

Mayor Bob McManus said the utility was given ample time to weigh in on the use of its property for a new aquatic center, versus claiming it for a new storage building??"and to change course now would go against the recommendation of a special pool study committee, and a previous vote by the Council to locate the new aquatic center on the existing Hefko Pool site.

According to a city memo, Ayres predicts a six-month design phase before taking bids for the project in February. City officials hope to break ground for the new aquatic center in the summer of 2020, with completion in August of 2022. Fundraising efforts will start shortly. The city has committed three-million dollars to the project, provided the rest is raised privately. The cost of the new facility is approximately six-million dollars.
