A Republican state lawmaker says Democratic Gov. Tony Evers’ order to fly a rainbow flag symbolizing gay pride over the Wisconsin state Capitol for the first time is divisive.According to the Associated Press, State Rep. Scott Allen in a tweet Friday asked, “Is this any more appropriate than erecting the Christian flag over the Capitol?” Allen, in a message to The Associated Press, says the rainbow flag “advocates a behavior or lifestyle that some Wisconsin residents may not condone. Therefore, it is divisive.”
Evers issued an executive order to fly the flag for the remainder of June in recognition of “Pride Month.” Evers says the rainbow flag has become an important symbol for the LGBTQ community and publicly displaying it “sends a clear an unequivocal message that Wisconsin is a welcoming and inclusive place.”
