State Senate Passes Step Therapy Bill

Thursday, June 6th, 2019 -- 7:41 AM

(WRN) -A bill passed by the State Senate on Wednesday will make it easier for patients to get around what's known as 'step therapy'.

The State Senate has passed a bill to limit the sorts of treatments an insurance company can require for some expensive conditions. Senator Alberta Darling says the bill requires insurance providers to provide medical reasons as to why patients need to go through less expensive treatments first.

"Often individuals have to go through several steps before they can get to the step the doctor wanted them to be in from the beginning."

Darling says that can often delay life saving treatments.

"There'll be better health outcomes if the patient and doctor get together and are able to take the right therapy or drugs."

If a treatment is denied, the patient will have the right to appeal the decision. The bill now moves to the Assembly.
