State Senate Passes Bill Legalizing Electric Scooters

Thursday, June 6th, 2019 -- 7:40 AM

(WRN) The State Senate has taken the first step at legalizing electric scooters.

The Senate passed a bill on Wednesday that would put electric scooters like the for-rent Bird Scooters in the same class of vehicle like mopeds and personal mobility devices. That means the devices would be cleared for use on sidewalks and bike lanes, but not on many highways. Local governments would still be allowed to make laws on where those scooters may be parked.

The bill passed on Wednesday would put electric scooters like the for-rent Bird Scooters into the same classification as mopeds and personal mobility chairs. They would not need state registration, and would be cleared for use on sidewalks and bike lanes. The bill now moves to the State Assembly.
