(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin's largest farm organization has a message for legislator who are working on the next state budget: fix our local roads! In a letter to the Joint Finance Committee, the Wisconsin Farm Bureau asked lawmakers to support funding for a long-term solution for transportation. WFBF President Jim Holte says infrastructure like roads, bridges and highways are an important foundation to Wisconsin's agricultural industry. He says increased funding to towns and counties for such infrastructure is crucial to helping rural communities function. The farm group contends that local governments cannot maintain the deteriorating road system with the current funding formulas.
To continue supporting Wisconsin's diverse agriculture industry, we must reinvest locally, Holte noted. Governor Tony Evers is proposing an eight-cents per gallon tax hike on gasoline to be used for the state's transportation budget. But GOP lawmakers say they do not favor the increase, saying it would be too much of a financial burden to consumers.
