Wisconsin DNR Reminds Everyone to be Safe on the Water

Tuesday, June 4th, 2019 -- 7:44 AM

(WRN) -Summer is here and the Department of Natural Resources is reminding people to wear their flotation devices on the state's lakes and rivers.

The Department of Natural Resources is reminding people to keep safe on rivers this spring and summer.

Chief Warden Todd Schaller says even if you're putting your boat or canoe into calm waters, that can change downstream.

"Bends in the river, or vegetation across the river, logs and things, that can change that safe environment in a quick manner and take you out of your comfort zone."

Schaller says people need to be especially careful in the Great Lakes this time of year, because even a short time overboard can be deadly.

"It might be 80, 90 out, but those water bodies, their temperatures lag behind ,and hypothermia can set in even in July."

Schaller says the best way to prevent accidents is to wear your personal flotation devices and be sure your surrounding are safe.

"Wisconsin's a great place to enjoy the outdoors, and certainly our waterways. And we want you to do it for years to come and not have that tragic event."

He reminds everyone to wear their life preservers, and keep to safe stretches or bodies of water they're used to until fast water conditions have passed.
