With a Rare Agreement Between Wisconsin's Political Parties, Could It Help Clark County's Court?

Monday, June 3rd, 2019 -- 11:52 AM

-Could Clark County finally get some help with its loaded court system?

The short answer: possibly. On Tuesday of last week, the Wisconsin Joint Finance Committee approved more funding for public defenders and district attorneys in the Wisconsin State Budget. It was one of the rare items that both Republicans and Democrats agreed on. Clark County has looked at the idea of adding a 2nd circuit court or another district attorney on several occasions in the past to help with the full load of cases the county court system is dealing with, which has steadily increased over the years due to increased drug cases.

Even with the approval of funds, it’s not a simple process. The Director of State Court’s Office in Madison would have to work with the legislature to pass new legislation authorizing a 2nd judge for Clark County. This is also determined by the “Weighted Case Load Analysis.” Back in 2017, Clark County was ranked 5th on the list of 72 counties in regards to needing a new judge.
