Walleye Population in Lake Superior in Good Shape

Monday, June 3rd, 2019 -- 7:39 AM

(WRN) -The Lake Superior walleye population is in good shape according to the Department of Natural Resources.

If you're looking for some good walleye fishing yet this summer, the Department of Natural Resources says Chequamegon Bay is a good bet. D N R fisheries biologist Dray Carl says some late spring netting and tagging brought in decent sized walleyes in the 20 inch range, with a top size of 31 inches.

"Hopefully we'll see them again from anglers or in our surveys later this year."

Carl says the surveys and tagging are part of their overall research on walleyes and also ensuring a healthy population.

"Those are two big factors that go into trying to set effective regulations on the fishery.'

Carl says you'll have good luck landing a trophy if you take the time to come to Lake Superior and Chequamegon Bay.

"Lots of bigger walleye compared inland lakes, because they can grow bigger in this bigger Lake System."

The daily limit for Chequamegon Bay is 5 fish over 15 inches, but only one fish over 20 inches. Carl reminds people to please report any tagged fish they catch to the DNR. If you are heading up to Lake Superior, wardens remind you to wear your life vest because the Great Lakes are still dangerously cold this year and if you fall in the water you can easily get hypothermia.
