Wisconsin's Floriculture Industry Had a Good Year in 2018

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin's wholesale floriculture industry had a good year in 2018.New figures from the Department of Agriculture show the value of all floriculture crops from growers with $10,000 or more in sales totaled $82 million. Last year, there were 369 total producers in the Badger State, of which 145 had sales more than $100,000. Greenhouse space for 2018 totaled 10.4 million square-feet, and accounted for 96 percent of the total covered area. Shade and temporary cover, at 431,000 square-feet, and open ground, at 980 acres, accounted for the remainder of the area. For operations with $100,000 or more in sales in Wisconsin, annual bedding and garden plants accounted for the largest portion of sales, at $46.4 million, followed by herbaceous perennial plants, at $16.6 million.
Nationally, the wholesale value of floriculture crops was up six percent from the 2015 valuation. The total crop value at wholesale for all growers with $10,000 or more in sales is estimated at $4.63 billion for 2018, compared with $4.37 billion for 2017. California continues to be the leading state, with crops valued at $1.20 billion.
