(WRN) -Governor Tony Evers plans to veto Republican bills aimed at further limiting access to abortions. The state Assembly passed four bills last week. None have been taken up by the Senate yet, but the Democratic governor said Tuesday that he would veto all four if they get to his desk. Evers said in a tweet: "We shouldn’t be limiting the right for women to make their own healthcare decisions." The bills include one that requires doctors provide medical care to babies born after failed abortion attempts, which opponents claim is extremely rare.
In a Tuesday tweet, Evers included the hashtag "StopTheBans" - a response by abortion rights advocates to restrictive new laws, including Alabama's effectively outlawing abortion. One of four bills passed by the Assembly last week requires doctors provide medical care to babies born after failed abortion attempts. Its author, Representative Jim Steineke, tried to rile up anti-abortion activists by falsely stating Evers is "for abortion at anytime for any reason, apparently extending to the survivors."
