Farmers Able to Make Progress in the Fields Last Week

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Last week was the best yet for farmers who have been waiting patiently to get a jump start on their spring field work this year.The latest crop/weather summary from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture said many took advantage of the warm and dry weather to till fields and plant crops before the weekend brought more precipitation. Temperatures also fluctuated during the week, with some nights falling into the 30s. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated at 61 percent adequate and 39 percent surplus. No areas of the state were low on moisture, according to the report. As of Sunday, about 35 percent of the corn had been planted, which is five days slower than last year and 11 days behind the average. Emergence is also behind at just three-percent, statewide.
In the soybean fields, 12 percent of that crop is now in the ground. That's a full week behind last year and 10 days off the five-year average. And Sixty-one percent of the oats were seeded, with 28 percent emerged. Nearly half of the winter wheat was reported to be in good to excellent condition.
