Bill that Would Increase Funding for Farm Equipment Safety Program Headed Out of Committee

Wednesday, May 8th, 2019 -- 6:22 AM

(WRN) -A bill that would increase the funding for a program to help make farm equipment safer is headed to the state Senate floor.

A central Wisconsin lawmaker is looking to increase safety for farm equipment. The bill would increase the funding for a program that pays for rollover protection structures for tractors and other equipment. State senator Patrick Testin says the systems are lifesavers.

"These ROPS have proved to cut down death and injury in the events of rollovers, when used in conjunction with a seat belt, by almost 100 percent."

Testin says there's a lot of tractors that need overhauling.

"We have roughly 100-thousand tractors that are in operation in the state of Wisconsin that do not currently have these systems in place."

Testin says the funding could help put more of those systems on the nearly 100-thousand Wisconsin tractors that don't have it.

"We want to make sure that our farmers who bust their backs every day can come home safely at the end of a long day's work."

Testin says the bill already has bipartisan support, and that he's hoping it comes up for a vote on the Senate floor soon.
