(WRN) -Republicans are gutting Democratic Governor Tony Evers' proposed budget. And according to the Legislature's nonpartisan fiscal bureau, that will create a 1-point 4 billion dollar deficit over the next two years. That's roughly the amount Evers wants to increase state spending on K-12 education. The changes call for scrapping more than 130 provisions of Evers' budget including an expansion of Medicaid and tax increases on large manufacturers.
They also want to eliminate various non-fiscal items Evers put in his budget, including legalizing medical marijuana and de-penalizing possession of small amounts of pot, and permitting immigrants living here illegally to get state driver’s licenses or ID cards.
