Spring Field Work Progressing Slowly

Tuesday, April 30th, 2019 -- 9:46 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -With just three days suitable for fieldwork across Wisconsin last week, farmers did what they could to get their fields tilled and ready for spring planting.

The weekly crop report by the state's agriculture department noted that temperatures reached the 70s and 80s on Monday before cooler and wet weather returned later in the week. Far southern Wisconsin even saw up to six inches of snow. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 62 percent adequate and 38 percent surplus. As of Sunday, spring tillage was 19 percent complete statewide, which was three days ahead of last year, but four days behind average.

Just four percent of the corn has been planted, also slightly below normal. A few southern Wisconsin reporters saw soybeans being planted. About a fifth of the oats have been drilled across Wisconsin, with three percent of the crop showing emergence. Normally, that would be closer to 10 percent by late-April. And winter wheat was 44 percent in good to excellent condition statewide.
