ATTORNEY: VANG MIGHT NOT DENY HE SHOT HUNTERS

Monday, November 29th, 2004 -- 10:58 AM

It's likely the trial defense of a Minnesota man accused of gunning down six hunters will not center on whether he killed the five men and one woman but why the shootings happened, one of his attorneys said Sunday.

Milwaukee attorney Steven Kohn was quoted this week as saying, "this certainly does not seem to be a whodunit, it seems to be a whydunit." As Chai Soua Vang sat in the Sawyer County Jail Sunday afternoon, his defense attorneys and his oldest daughter were at a downtown Milwaukee restaurant talking to the media about the case. Charges are expected to be filed today in Sawyer County. Vang is scheduled to make his initial appearance Tuesday morning from the jail. Yesterday, his attorneys declined to say who hired them or who is paying their bills. While the public defender's office initially handled the case, the prominent Milwaukee attorneys were hired Wednesday and met with Vang for about two hours on Thanksgiving.
