Weather Still Not Cooperating with Farmers

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -More saturation in Wisconsin fields last week meant farmers had to wait a little bit longer before getting a start on their spring field activity. The latest crop/weather summary from the state's agriculture department noted that heavy rains and varied temperatures kept the tractors in the sheds; though most of the snow and frost have dissipated. Topsoil moisture levels were rated 54 percent adequate and 46 percent surplus, according to the report. As of Easter Sunday, spring tillage was just eight percent complete statewide. That was five percentage points better than last week, but still behind average.
For the first time this year, reporters are seeing some corn being planted, though that was only at one-percent as of the weekend. In the oat fields, 10 percent of that crop is now in the ground. Nearly half of the winter wheat was rated at good to excellent condition, which is up eight percentage points from last week.
