-There are exciting things coming up in Black River Falls.I spoke with Amanda Gunn, the Executive Director of the Black River Falls Chamber of Commerce, and she talked about some of the upcoming events in Black River Falls.
“There’s always big celebrations around Memorial Day. There’s the big Pow-Wow at the Ho-Chunk Pow-Wow Grounds. Also, over in Hatfield, is the giant flea market and craft show, which is very, very popular with people. And then, coming up in July, is the Karner Blue Butterfly Festival along with our Karner Blue Race, which is a half marathon, 10K and 5K and also a free kids race. So, that kinda kicks off the festival in the morning and then there’s going to be a whole day of activities. The Downtown Association plans the festival portion and we handle the race portion of it. And so they’re going to have different vendors down there, different activities, kids games, music, parade, a whole bunch of stuff going on that Saturday. And that will also be the same weekend as the big FQHR World Horse Show that will be coming in.”
Riley: “And this is the first time Black River Falls is hosting that show, correct?”
“Yes, it will be the first time. It’s been down in Nebraska for about 15 years and then they decided to move it up here to our area, so it should be a pretty fun weekend. A busy weekend!”
“Those are kinda the big ones right now. There are a few other ones we do. May 4th is the Great Tastes Festival up at the Milt Lunda Arena at the fairgrounds. You can purchase tickets and then go sample all the different local beers, wines, cheeses and meats. It’s just kind of a whole evening of fun. 4pm-8pm. And then the following day, on May 5th, there is a brand new wedding show. It’s called New Beginnings Bridal Fair. It’s going to be out at Garden Valley Gatherings. And that will have different bridal options, different catering options. And they’re marketing it as not just bridal, but as new beginnings and a way to showcase different businesses in the area and different services that we have here locally instead of going out of the area for those services.”
Amanda also talked about the exciting revitalization of the downtown area in Black River Falls.
“There’s so many great businesses down there. Great places to eat. All sorts of different foods. Rosario’s is Italian, that’s kind of been a staple for awhile. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican restaurant and that’s also been there awhile. There’s also Mr. Pita, which they have amazing food! It’s kind of a hometown restaurant, hometown prices. It’s just a really, really nice, clean atmosphere. There’s also The Wright Place downtown.”
“And then there’s shopping opportunities too. There’s Millie J’s, which is all sorts of different ladies clothing, sizes small through, I think, she has up through 3-4X. So, all sorts of different sizes for any type of women. There’s First Fruits Common Market with all sorts of different bulk, local foods, whole foods. Just a lot of different places. And then the hemp shop of course, that’s kind of a big draw in our area. We got a designation now. Black River Falls is the Hemp Capital of Wisconsin. That’s is just a designation that Priceland Hemp applied for through the state and we have that designation for 10 years.”
If you’re interested in keeping up to date on what’s happening in Black River Falls, Amanda explained how you can do so.
“They can go on our website, it’s blackrivercountry.net. And then you can view our calendar of events, view past newsletters, things that are going on. We try to keep everything updated. All of our member businesses are listed there with their own listings and there’s options too to sign up for our email list. We do a weekly email every Thursday, just kind of what’s happening in our area and things to be on the lookout for. We do have a Facebook Page too. It’s called Explore Black River County and we try to post updates on things going on.”
