Clark County Board of Supervisors Approves New Compensation Policy

Friday, April 19th, 2019 -- 11:57 AM

-The Clark County Board of Supervisors approved a new compensation policy for county employees at their meeting on Tuesday.

A lengthy discussion was held on the resolution. The purpose of the new policy was to offer some clarification and clear up inconsistencies with the various county positions and provide more consistent pay to employees comparable to other markets our size. Several department heads were in attendance to explain the difficulty they have in hiring and retaining workers due to the lower pay scale in the county. They said it can take over 7 months before a position is filled. This new system also allows county employees to request to have their positions reclassified, to possibly seek a raise, once a year in June, compared to all year like it was before. This new system also has the possibility of saving the county some money.

For example, with the old system, if the county pays $33 million in wages for the year 2019 and provides $300,000 in raises, they need to budget for $33,300,000 in 2020. If they have $400,000 in raises in 2020, they would need to budget for $33,700,000 in 2021 and so on and so forth. However, with the new system, they always start with the base amount, for example $33 million, every year. The resolution was approved with 17 voting yes and 8 voting no. Finally, the board approved the first reading of an ordinance approving amendments to Clark County’s Code of Ordinances.
