(WRN) -If you haven't yet started your taxes, now's probably a good time to file for an extension with the IRS.If you haven't yet started your taxes, you might want to file for an extension. State revenue secretary Peter Barca says it's very easy to do.
"You just request an extension from the IRS. If you do that you automatically receive an extension from the state."
Barca says filing for an extension is free, and you don't have to explain why you need one.
"Maybe they moved, maybe their information didn't arrive in time. You know, if if you can't get it done, we totally understand that, just file an extension."
Barca says not filing your taxes can often be worse than owing money back to the government.
"If you don't file by April 15th, you will get late filing penalties, and you can get interest penalties."
The IRS is expecting over 180-thousand Wisconsin residents to file for extensions this year.
