(Marshfield News Herald) -Life keeps getting better for the newborn puppies rescued from a trash can.An Antigo teen raised $6,396 to donate to the Marshfield Area Pet Shelter, where the nine puppies are currently living. On Wednesday she presented shelter officials with a check. Julianna Bauknecht, 13, has run a nonprofit called Caring Paws to help abused and neglected animals since she was 9 years old. Police pulled the Australian shepherd Labrador puppies from a trash can Feb. 28 after a salesman heard what sounded like kittens coming from the can in the 800 block of East Fourth Street in Marshfield. The puppies were taken to the shelter, where they are with their mother being cared for by a foster family. At 5 weeks old, the puppies are doing well and growing quickly, the shelter wrote in a post. They will be up for adoption beginning April 11. They all have names of Wisconsin cheeses ??" Brie, Swiss, Cheddar and more.
On March 21 Wood County prosecutors charged Robert M. Wild, 56, with intentionally mistreating animals and intentionally abandoning animals, both misdemeanors. Police say he put the puppies in the trash can the day they were born. He will make his first appearance in court April 22, according to court records, and faces up to 18 months in jail, if convicted. The shelter responded to Julianna’s donation with gratitude.
