(WRN) -Forty-eight elk from Kentucky have been relocated in northwestern Wisconsin. The elk made the 14-hour overnight ride from Kentucky to their new home in Flambeau River State Forest near Hayward. Once released, they'll join more than 200 elk that make up Wisconsin's northern elk herd in Ashland, Bayfield, Price, Rusk and Sawyer counties.
It's the final relocation of the animals, going back to release of 25 Michigan elk in 1995 in Ashland County. The elk released this year, as well as 31 Kentucky elk released here in 2017, are intended to boost herd growth and genetics.
