Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service's First Crop-Weather Summary for 2019
Tuesday, April 2nd, 2019 -- 8:47 AM
(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The snow is rapidly melting across the state, but most farm fields are far from being dry enough to start fieldwork. The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service issued its first weekly crop-weather summary of the year on Monday, which stated frost is beginning to leave the ground in some southern areas. DATCP field scouts report that dry conditions have brought water levels down, with the exception of lower areas near the Mississippi River. Farmers have also been busy spreading manure where field conditions allowed. So far, alfalfa and winter wheat had not broken dormancy. The state's first alfalfa winterkill numbers will be available by May.
As of March 31, spring tillage had not started yet, despite the fact that one-percent of the fields were already worked up a year ago at this time. Meanwhile, warm daytime temperatures and below-freezing nights had maple sap flowing this week. Reporters commented that the sap run started later than usual this season.
