Shopko Closures Leaves Gap in Some Clark County Communities
Friday, March 22nd, 2019 -- 1:08 PM
-The announcement of Shopko closing its remaining stores has left small communities reeling. Not only will bigger communities like Marshfield be losing their Shopko, but Clark County communities will be losing their hometown stores as well including Stanley, Abbotsford and here in Neillsville. These communities were already struggling to fill the gaps left when those Shopko’s lost their eye clinics and pharmacies, but now many of these communities will be losing their locations for clothing, electronics, office supplies and more. This also leaves empty buildings for communities to contend with. Here in Neillsville, Shopko’s empty building will join the likes of Gordy’s former location on Highway 10 and Figi’s plant in the business district.
Shopko’s closure joins a host of other businesses that have closed recently including Figi’s, Gordy’s, OfficeMax in Marshfield, Subway in Spencer and others. Even the Family Dollar here will Neillsville will be changing to a Dollar Tree as that company closes down stores in the age of big box retailers, online shopping and Amazon.
