With the Spring Thaw, Make Sure You Have Flood Insurance

Monday, March 11th, 2019 -- 1:14 PM

(WRN) -State officials are reminding you to freshen up your home's flood insurance policies before spring flooding gets here.

There's a possibility for some strong floods again this spring once all this snow starts melting, so it's a good time to look at your flood insurance. Olivia Hwang with the State Commissioner of Insurance office says not having insurance can get extremely expensive.

"We know that only one inch of water in your home or property can cause up to $25,000. That's a lot of damage to happen even with just a small amount of water."

Hwang says there's federal programs available to help you find out your risk of damage.

"The National Flood Insurance Program is a program that's managed by FEMA, and that's a great way to get flood insurance, which is really a supplemental thing to your homeowner's insurance policy."

Hwang says you can get personalized information online from FEMA.

"You can go to the National Flood Insurance Program website which is Flood Smart dot Gov, and you can also call your insurance agent and ask them questions about your coverage and what additional riders or policies might be available to you."

She reminds people that most homeowners insurance policies don't normally carry flood insurance, so it's a good idea to make sure you have a rider if you need it.
