Greenwood School District Discusses Security Proposal

Thursday, March 7th, 2019 -- 10:11 AM

-The Greenwood School District held a public informational meeting regarding a security proposal Tuesday evening.

The meeting was focused on the proposal to relocate the school office at the elementary school, thereby creating a main entry system in line with school safety/security recommendations. This meeting allowed for public reaction and comment. This proposal is part of a package of items the district approved after receiving Safety Grants from the state. The Safety Grants were enacted after the horrific school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School in Florida in February of 2018. Greenwood received $41,564 in the first round of grants and $21,295 in the second round.

Some improvements already completed include increased number/quality of internal and external security cameras at both schools, magnetic door sensors at both schools, safety film for main entrance door glass, improved exterior lighting around schools, conducted a complete district safety assessment and more. For the future, the district would like to improve security at the main entrances at both schools. The School Board will be considering the office proposal at the March 11th school board meeting.
