"Hidden In Plain Sight" display in Neillsville

Saturday, March 2nd, 2019 -- 7:09 AM

On March 3rd from 9-10 a.m. and 11-1p.m. before and after church services at United Church of Christ in Neillsville, community members will be given the opportunity to view the “Hidden in Plain Sight” display.

UW-Extension and the Clark County Drug Prevention specialist will be present to discuss the display with parents. Hidden in Plain Sight is a display model of a teenager’s bedroom with approximately 35 “red flags” or signs of substance use, including ways a teen might glorify substance use. The goal of this program is to educate parents, grandparents, teachers, caregivers and anyone who works with teens. By the end of this program participants will know what seemingly innocent items can be indicators of substance use. Participants will also learn about drug slang, current trends and signs and symptoms of substance abuse. Hidden in Plain Sight is intended for adults only to avoid providing adolescents with a do-it-yourself plan to deceive parents and other adults.

Many of those using drugs report experimenting with use beginning before the age of 13. It should only take about five to ten minutes of the parent’s time to go through the display but those few minutes will help parents gain insight into the drug scene and how to have those difficult conversations with their teen. Pastor Jacob Koppert is the contact person at 715-743-2147 or UW-Extension at 715-743-5121.
