Marshfield Area Schools Placed Under Lockdown Earlier Today

Friday, March 1st, 2019 -- 4:35 PM

Press release from Marshfield Police Department Chief Rick Gramza

On March 1st, at 12:25 pm, Marshfield Police Department learned of a 14 year old juvenile who may have been in possession of a handgun.

The mother of the juvenile witnessed her son placing the handgun in a backpack while “Facetiming” with him while the juvenile was at an unknown location with a 16 year old friend. This information was immediately shared with Wood County Dispatch and the decision was made by officers to place the Marshfield Public School District and Columbus Catholic Schools under lockdown while officers searched for the subjects.

At approximately 3:00 p.m., the two juveniles were apprehended on school grounds, hiding in a vehicle in the school parking lot. Located with them was a “BB” handgun replicating an actual firearm . Both subjects were safely taken into custody and transported to the police department. School was dismissed and there is no threat to the community. The police department continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to this incident.

We want to thank the Marshfield School District, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department, the Wood County Emergency Dispatch Center and all media outlets from Central Wisconsin for their assistance in keeping our schools and the community safe.
