(WRN) -Dangerous cold and wind chills have descended across Wisconsin. The state Department of Health Services has recommendations to keep you and others safe. Protect yourself by wearing loose layers of clothing underneath a wind and weather resistant coat. Look for symptoms of hypothermia including shivering, exhaustion, confusion, and slurred speech. Check on your neighbors. Isolated or elderly individuals can be unaware of rapidly changing weather conditions and may not be able to sense and respond to low temperatures during winter.
If you must travel, have an emergency supply kit for your car. Include jumper cables, sand, a flashlight, warm clothes, blankets, bottled water, and non-perishable snacks. Keep the gas tank full. Learn the signs of, and basic treatments for, frostbite and hypothermia.
