Senator Baldwin Calls for Common Sense Ideas for Border Security

Wednesday, January 30th, 2019 -- 9:05 AM

(WRN) -Senator Tammy Baldwin is calling on a bipartisan congressional committee on border security to think about more than just illegal immigration.

A Congressional committee to hash out border security is starting this week, and Senator Tammy Baldwin says there needs to be more than just talk on stopping illegal immigration. She says one of the major goals of border security should be slowing and stopping illegal drugs.

"We need to use effective technology to interdict illegal drugs. Frankly, not all of the illegal drugs that come into the United State come across the Mexican border."

She says that the flow of illegal drugs must be stopped, and not just at the Mexican border.

"Fentanyl is often mailed into the United States from China through international mail facilities. So we have to view that also as part of our front line effort to interdict illegal drugs."

Baldwin is standing with fellow Democrats on doing more than just building a wall. She says an effective plan includes smart technology, more border agents, and more judges to handle immigration cases.

"It's a mix of technology, better border infrastructure, and personnel."

That committee is set to work out a deal on homeland security funding for the next three weeks as part of a deal to restart the government. Congress has until February 15 to work out a plan before the government shuts down again.
