(WRN) -Now that the government is open again, Senator Tammy Baldwin is looking to ensure that workers who lost wages during the shutdown get paid. Now that the government is open again, Senator Tammy Baldwin is looking to ensure that workers who lost wages during the shutdown get paid. Baldwin says we can't just stop at the full time government workers, but also third party workers who rely on working at government facilities.
"And then we have to look at the predicament of federal contractors who aren't covered by legislation on back payment."
Baldwin says her bills would not only ensure that furloughed workers get their money back with interest, but also prevent banks and landlords from coming after workers because of the shutdown.
"Many of them who live paycheck to paycheck took out loans or were late on payments. They're looking at fees that will accrue because of that."
Baldwin wants to ensure that federal workers get the money they're owed and more.
"Workers who are furloughed and who are forced to work without pay should be given their back pay plus interest."
She says if the federal government can come after you for increased fees for missing a tax payment, it should offer those same fees to workers who missed checks. She's also looking to extend those protections to federal contractors who aren't currently protected under the law.
