Remember Your Pets and Livestock During the Bitter Cold

Monday, January 28th, 2019 -- 11:44 AM

(WRN) -The incoming bitter cold temperatures aren't just hazardous to people, they can also be deadly to your outdoor pets and animals.

The polar vortex is going to make life cold and miserable for people, but also for outdoor animals and farm livestock. State ag spokeswoman Leann Duwe says keeping your horses, cows and other large animals warm and dry is paramount.

"For larger animals, something like a wind break or just a three sided shelter will help protect them from the elements. With the smaller animals, finding an enclosed space will help them to better keep their body heat. Animals need additional nutritional requirements which increases about 1 percent for every degree that the temperature falls below 20 degrees."

Smaller animals need a complete shelter, something insulated and able to hold in the heat. Also remember to provide fresh, open water for your animals, either with a heated basin or by bringing them fresh water twice a day.
