Wisconsin Utility Companies Offer Safety Message for Farmers on Space Heater Use

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -One of Wisconsin's largest utility companies has a message for farms that need to keep small animals warm in the barn over the winter months: use your space heaters properly. We Energies says farmers rely on space heaters and extension cords to provide additional warmth in their buildings. And while the units keep animals and people comfortable, they can be dangerous if not used in the correct manner. When dealing with space heaters, We Energies recommends that farmers install and maintain CO detectors. Keep heaters away from combustible materials and a safe distance from people and animals. And do not leave the heaters unattended.
Meanwhile, many space heaters are not recommended for use with extension cords, so read the manufacturer's operating instructions. A recent study found that Wisconsin led the nation in barn fires that resulted in the deaths of farm animals over the past year. Many of those fires were a result of faulty wiring or from unattended space heaters.
