Owen-Withee School Board Discusses April Referendum

Friday, January 18th, 2019 -- 8:00 AM

-The Owen-Withee School Board discussed the April Referendum at their meeting on Monday.

A review of the 2014 referendum and the different strategies employed to educate the public was conducted. Several of the things that were done in 2014 will be done again for the April 2nd 2019 referendum. The board will review a plan at the February meeting to continue the discussion. The board also approved the hiring of Albert Goerlitz, Jr. to be the head track coach this spring. District Administrator Bob Houts presented to the board the Department of Safety and Professional Services inspection report that was received on December 18th. Five violations were identified on the report. First, the mezzanines in the wood/metals shops do not have a visible load rating on them. The district is in the process of having a structural engineer calculate that rating and get required documentation completed.

Second, the stairs leading to the mezzanine in the wood shop needs an intermediate rail to prevent falls. The railing/stairs will be removed and replaced by portable stairway system. Third, the ladder leading to the mezzanine in the metal shop is not up to code. The ladder will be removed and replaced by portable stairway system. Fourth, the opening in the mezzanine in the metal shop does not have enough railing to prevent a fall. The railing will be corrected as they change the way they get into the mezzanine. Finally, the curtains on the stage do not indicate that they have been treated with a flame retardant. The maintenance staff will be spraying the curtains on January 18th and keeping records for reapplication.
