Marshfield Planning Commission Moves Hotel Project Forward

Wednesday, January 16th, 2019 -- 8:00 AM

(WDLB) -Marshfield aldermen will be asked next week to sign off on a hotel development that took a big step forward last night.

The city's Plan Commission voted 6-1 in favor of a conditional use request from Prairie Lodging LLC for a four-story, 86-room Hampton Inn and Suites on the site of the shuttered Knights of Columbus Hall at 400 West Upham Street. Bill Penker cast the only vote against the development last night. Last night's endorsement of the project came one week after the Marshfield Common Council did not get enough "yes" votes in favor of a request to create a Tax incremental Financing, or "TIF", district to assist Prairie Lodging in developing the hotel. Alderman Peter Hendler, who missed that Council meeting last week, was a "yes" vote on the Plan Commission last night. Hendler said he was originally opposed to the development, but since last week's decision by the council, the situation had changed.

Mayor Bob McManus reiterated concerns by neighboring property owners on Leonhard Street. He said they were asking for three considerations. Number one is that the south side of the hotel property not have access off of Leonhard, except for emergency vehicles. Those residents also don't want sidewalks added on their side of the street. And they asked for, and got, a requirement that some sort of buffer be created between the hotel and Leonhard Street, using shrubs, trees or fencing. A master sign plan request from the hotel developer was also approved. The requests will now go to the Marshfield Common Council for consideration next week Tuesday, January 22nd.
